A new year, means a new Fat Quarter Shop quilt along!

These spools are an exciting opportunity to try a slightly different color palette.

I am welcoming 2023 with a brand new quilt along. Fat Quarter Shop is hosting another fun quilt along, using very cool pattern created by Lori Holt (of Bee in my Bonnet), called Scrappy Spools.

The final quilt will be 72.5″ x 90.5″, and the quilt along will take place from January through December 2023.

As always, one of my first steps in planning a large quilt project is to do an analysis of what will need to be cut and comparing that against my inventory of Accuquilt dies.

I know that I can take advantage of squares and half-square triangles, but the first month’s set of blocks also called for a BOB die, specifically the log cabin die, but only the first 5 logs. So I figured out the best sizes to cut logs 1-4 and a 2″ x 6.5″ strip for the 5″ logs.

Fabric Selection

For this project, I wanted to keep my fabric selection within the Riley Blake family of fabrics. I typically go with a very cool color palette, but ensuring a nice punch of my favorite, chartreuse! I wanted to explore a warmer color palette and when I found Melissa Lee’s Harmony collection, I immediately fell in love!

I especially loved the warm honey color, and decided to use that as my background color. I selected Confetti Cottons in honey, because it seemed to be a match, both on screen and in color name. After receiving my fabric IRL, I didn’t quite feel the initial design intention coming through. So I ordered Confetti Cottons in cheddar and definitely felt the warmth that I was looking for in my initial color selection.

I also selected an assortment of other solids based on the colors included in the collection, to ensure I had a nice range of options to work with.
