Fat Quarter Shop 2022 Flea Market Quilt Along

2022 Flea Market Quilt Along

This is going to be a fun quilt along!

I love taking a “traditional” style quilt pattern and finding a way to work in more modern textiles.

I am kicking off 2022 with yet another fun quilt along hosted by Fat Quarter Shop. This time, it is the Flea Market quilt. The pattern was created by Lori Holt (of Bee in my Bonnet), and was inspired by some of her favorite experiences exploring and discovering unique flea market finds.

The final quilt will be 96 1/2″ x 96 1/2″, and the quilt along will take place from January through December 2022.

The Quilt & The Breakdown

Planning to Cut

One of my first steps in planning a large quilt project is to do an analysis of what will need to be cut and comparing that against my inventory of Accuquilt dies.

In my initial browsing of the pattern, I felt I need to order a couple of dies. One was the 1 1/4″ strip die, due to the number of 1 1/4″ strips needed for the Churndash Blocks and the number of 1 1/4″ squares needed for the Primrose Blocks. Another was the 2 3/4″ square (2 1/4″ finished), due to the number of 2 3/4″ squares needed for the Flea Market Star Block. And I also ordered the 3″ half-square triangle die (2 1/2″ finished) die, due to all the 3″ half-square triangles needed for the Basket Blocks.

I already owned a few of the other blocks that would be helpful, like the 2 3/4″ half-square triangle die (2 1/4″ finished), 2 1/2″ half-square triangle, 2″ strip die, 4 1/2″ half-square triangle die, and 3″ square die and 5″ square die.

Fabric Selection

I really enjoy the process of selecting fabric for large, and somewhat sampler-style quilt patterns. Each block has its own character, but ultimately is a part of the character of the entire quilt.

I like to pull fabrics from a single fabric designer, with a wide range of bright, vibrant colors to choose from, but that all relate back to each other.

For this quilt, I decided to go with fabric designer Alison Glass, in my fabric pull.

I chose from a selection of her Sun Print 2021, Century Solids, and a few selections from other seasons, to fulfill all the fabric requirements.

Conclusion

The first block, The Flea Market Star Block begins in January. I hope you’ll join in and post your progress!
